As a resident of Cayucos, I enjoy all the year-round events our little hamlet offers.
As in the past, I went down to the beach for the annual New Years Day Carlin Soule Memorial Polar Bear Dip. I didnt go to jump in or to watch the hundreds of people that rush into the water to get wet and receive accolades and certificates.
I went to watch those brave, unsung few that actually swim around the pier, coming out of the water on the north side to the cheers of family and friends. These are the people I admire.
This year, 15 to 20 people made the long, cold, successful swim. Because the pier is currently closed, this year I, my wife, sister and brother-in-law stood on the beach, clapping and cheering as each swimmer emerged from the water. I know you didnt all hear or see us, but I hope in the future there are more of us gathered to recognize your feat and to give you the recognition you deserve.
Way to go.
