Belle Pullen, all 6 pounds, 14 ounces of her, was a little girl in a hurry when she became the first baby born in San Luis Obispo County in 2014.

Her parents, Danielle Weyrich and Brian Pullen, arrived at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center at about 10:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and little Belle was born soon after, at 12:38 a.m.

Weyrich had been cleaning the house that evening in preparation for the induced birth she had scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, when she realized that Belle wasn’t going to wait. The couple called Pullen’s parents, left their Santa Margarita home and hurried to the hospital in San Luis Obispo.

When Belle was born, “she was perfect,” Weyrich said. “It was the perfect way to ring in the new year with our baby Belle.”

The couple had nicknamed her Bell Pepper before she was born, so the name Belle just seemed right, said Pullen, who works as a registered nurse at Atascadero State Hospital. Weyrich is a home health aide.

Belle’s 3-year-old brother, Tristan, came to check out his baby sister Wednesday morning with his grandparents.

“I don’t think he’s figured out that this is his baby sister and that she’ll be coming home with us,” Weyrich said.

The reality may sink in when Belle arrives at the house dressed in the little white onesie with roses, matching hat and socks that Weyrich has tucked in an overnight bag.

The couple expects to be back home today, but who knows? Belle may have her own plans.
