Prep Roundup: Nipomo boys win in Garces soccer tourney

Coast Union is the only girls team that wins at the tourney

The Nipomo High boys soccer team rallied to beat Mammoth Lakes 2-1 in the final minute in the Gold B Division at the Garces Holiday Soccer Festival in Bakersfield on Friday afternoon.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Titans (4-7) tied it when Mike Arevalo converted on a penalty kick in the 50th minute. In the 79th minute, Efrain Navarro found Arevalo — whose second goal of the day lifted the Titans. Jason Alvarado had five saves for Nipomo.

Morro Bay lost 4-2 to Edison in the Gold A Division after leading 2-0 in the first half.

Templeton lost to Porterville 4-2 in the Gold B Division with Garrett Watson scoring both goals. Austin Alarcon had an assist for the Eagles (2-6).

Cesar Chavez beat Coast Union 5-3 in the Silver A Division. Oscar Catalan had two goals and an assist for the Broncos (2-7). Jose Abicia also scored, and Jorge Renteria and Rido Quintero also had assists.

South Bay Classic

Arroyo Grande lost 3-0 to Peninsula at South Torrance High. Danny Montero made seven saves for the Eagles (3-2-2).

GIRLS SOCCER

Garces Soccer Holiday Festival

Kelsey Shetler scored in the first half off a cross from Ellee Shields to tie it at 1 for San Luis Obispo, but it was not enough as two second- half goals gave Sierra Canyon a 3-1 win in the Premier A Division.

Paso Robles lost 2-1 on a  golden goal in overtime against Edison in the Premier B Division. Emilee Brown scored in the first minute of the second half for the Bearcats (5-1), but Edison responded with a goal in last 10 minutes of the second half and the first five minutes of overtime to secure the win.

Atascadero lost 1-0 as Lompoc scored in the first half in the Gold A Division. Atascadero (5-1) had its chances but could not capitalize as they had five shots inside the box in the second half.

Morro Bay could not overcome a goal from Frazier Mountain in the first 10 minutes as they lost 1-0 in the Gold B Division. Madelynn Martinez had nine saves for the Pirates.

Christina Plasencia led Coast Union to a 4-1 win over McFarland with all three of her goals coming in the second half of the Silver B Division match. 

Remy Corbet had the first goal and an assist on the second of Plasencia’s three goals.

Arroyo Grande 2, Cabrillo 0

Richelle Knupper led the Eagles with a goal in the first half and an assist on Brie Welch’s goal in the second half. Kendall Bowers had three saves for Arroyo Grande (5-1-1).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Clovis North 52, Arroyo Grande 46, OT

Arroyo Grande was up by three in the final seconds of regulation before Clovis North tied it with a 3-pointer before pulling away in overtime. 

Ashlynn Herlihy had 22 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks for the Eagles. 

Maricopa 31, Shandon 27

With the score tied in the final seconds, Shandon’s Andrea Lopez missed a 3-pointer from the corner that would have tied it.

Maribel Arroyo had 15 points for the Broncos (2-4, 0-2 Coast Valley League). 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Shandon 57, Maricopa 33

Cecero Goddard had 19 points, and Beige Grassotti had 18 as the Outlaws pulled away from the Indians in the second half.

Shandon (3-4, 1-1 CVL) outscored Maricopa 30-13 in the second half. Shandon was 11 of 15 from the free-throw line compared to Maricopa shooting 2 of 10.
