Benefits for those unemployed six months or more end Dec. 28. Non-renewal will cost 230,000 jobs by reducing the purchasing power of the unemployed. Non-renewal will create homelessness and require further expenditures.
The program pays for itself in higher income tax revenues, savings in unemployment benefits and savings in programs for the homeless. It is wrong to oppose it on the grounds that it must be paid for.
Opposition is based on the assumption that all who receive extended unemployment are lazy and must be forced to take a job. There are three applicants for every job available, and many dont have the skills for many jobs, like nursing. Many employers refuse to consider applications from persons unemployed for six months or older than 50.
