Morro Bay girls basketball cruises in Los Padres League opener

The Morro Bay High girls basketball team beat Cabrillo 54-23 on Thursday in its Los Padres League opener. 

Sierra Schwellenbach led the Pirates with 21 points and 11 steals. Morro Bay got out quickly, scoring 37 points in the first half and cruising to a 27-point lead. Kara Schmidt contributed 11 points as Morro Bay (8-1, 1-0) began the fourth quarter with a 33-point lead. The Pirates will continue league play against Santa Ynez on Jan. 8.

Santa Barbara 46, Arroyo Grande 25

Olivia Galindo and Ashlynn Herlihy each had eight points as the Eagles lost their second game in the Tournament of Champions in Santa Barbara. 

BOYS SOCCER

Morro Bay 3, Nipomo 1

Carlos Moreno had a goal and two assists to lead the Pirates on the road.

Marcelino Macias and Miguel Garcia also scored for Morro Bay (4-6, 1-1 LPL) after the game was scoreless at halftime. Valentine Janak had an assist for the Pirates.

Goalie Oscar Loeza had nine saves and center back Luca Bruno helped shutdown the Titans offense.

Santa Maria 2, Templeton 0

The Saints scored two quick goals in the first 12 minutes. 

Yusuke Yokota had six saves for Templeton (2-5, 1-1 LPL). The Eagles play today in the Garces Tournament. 

GIRLS SOCCER

Templeton 5, Santa Maria 3

The Eagles got in the win column for the first time this season with Rachel Foley scoring twice and registering an assist.

Miriam Robles and Christina Raine also scored for Templeton (1-8, 1-1 LPL). Courtney Elterman had an assist and Sammy Schmidt made three saves.

Morro Bay 1, Nipomo 1, tie

The Pirates opened up the scoring in the first 10 minutes of the game as Maddy Davey sent a cross in that was one-timed by Elsa Ruiz. 

Mayra Bautista would later score on a penalty kick for the Titans (2-6-2, 0-0-1 LPL). 

Madelynn Martinez had 12 saves for Morro Bay (2-2-2, 1-0-1).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cabrillo 70, Morro Bay 31

Solomon Ruddell had 12 rebounds and 12 blocks for the Pirates (0-11).

Coast Union 61, Valley Christian 41

The Broncos had five players in double digits, as Quinten Raethke led the way with a game-high 14 points and had 10 rebounds. Angel Avina (13 points), Logan Brandt (12), Jez Lawson (12), and Gehrig Kniffen (10) rounded out Coast Union’s top scorers (5-4, 1-0 Coast Valley League). Avina had eight assists.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Santa Ynez 10, San Luis Obispo 5

Emily Lovato had a hat trick, but the Tigers lost at home.

Addie Foster and Carly Stevenson also scored for San Luis Obispo (3-2). Anna Mullen had nine saves.

Cabrillo 16, Atascadero 10

Kylie Ferree led the Greyhounds (4-3) with four goals while Courtney McCarthy had two.
