Saavedra named Bronco volleyball MVP

Special to The CambrianDecember 19, 2013

Senior Itzel Saavedra has been named Most Valuable Player for the 2013 varsity volleyball program at Coast Union. Cameron MacTavish was given the Most Improved Player award and Sage Radecki was honored with the Coach’s Award.

Saavedra started out the year in several positions on the court but as the season went on, “We got smart and used her as a left-side hitter,” Kenyon explained. “That is a position she definitely shined in. She got the ball a lot — about 60 percent of the time — in that front row. She was definitely the go-to person when we needed a point.”

As to why Radecki was given the Coach’s Award, Head Coach Pam Kenyon said that a setter has to be “unselfish” and “alert” because her job is to get the ball to the player who will then slam it over the net.

“I would compare it to a point guard in basketball,” Kenyon explained. “The job of the non-shooting point guard is to feed the ball to the shooters. This is what Sage does so well in volleyball.

“She will go anywhere the ball is, dive into the bleachers, to keep the ball in play and get it in a position for our hitters to get it over the net.”

Cameron MacTavish was most improved because of her “natural ability” to move quickly around the court, the coach remarked. “She is tall and agile and that gives her the physical ability to be an effective player for us.”

Radecki was named to the First Team in the Coast Valley League, as was her teammate Cristina Plasencia. Saavedra was named to the league’s Second Team.

In the junior varsity volleyball program, Diana Cisneros was given the Most Improved Player award; Janelle Bohey received the Most Valuable Player award and Reagan Kniffen got the Coach’s Award.

The Lady Broncos’ varsity team finished Coast Valley League play with an 8-2 record. They then won their first CIF playoff game (over Upland Christian Academy) but lost a close, very tight battle in the second round to Santa Clarita Christian.
