Vigil for homeless set for Thursday in SLO

A National Homeless Persons Memorial Day vigil will be Thursday evening in San Luis Obispo to commemorate those who died while living on the streets.

The event is scheduled for 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday on the steps of the San Luis Obispo Superior Court, 1050 Monterey St.

The event is organized by the San Luis Obispo County Homeless Services Oversight Council.

According to the agency, nearly 2,186 people in the county were without a home during the last homeless count in January. Homelessness has increased by 3 percent since 2011, with more homeless children attending area schools.

Nearly 90 percent of homeless people in the county have no shelter, and 71 percent were living in the county when they became homeless, according to the agency. Nearly half report having some form of mental illness; 12 percent are veterans, according to the county agency.
