Bronco netters salute top players

Special to The CambrianDecember 12, 2013

Senior netter Melissa Mathieson won the Most Valuable Player award in varsity tennis this fall.

The top seed in the girl’s varsity tennis program this past fall — Melissa Mathieson — was named the Most Valuable Player by Coach Ron Ruggles.

Mathieson, a senior, won 70 percent of her matches, Ruggles reported. And she would have qualified for CIF playoffs, albeit she missed several matches due to illness.

The Most Improved Award went to Renee Johnson; the coach predicted that Johnson would be “really good next year” if she dedicates herself to a regular practice routine.

The Coach’s Award was given to Ariel Bruce, who was “one of the few girls (who) understood the game of doubles,” Ruggles explained.

Learning the strategies to employ in doubles is not easy, and over the past four years Bruce has become proficient because “she has a great attitude and she has perseverance,” Ruggles continued.
