College Roundup: Cal Poly swimmer Fierro breaks school record

Sophomore swims 500-yard freestyle in 4:21.32 at AT&T Winter National Championships

Sonny Fierro broke the Cal Poly men’s 500-yard freestyle school record at the AT&T Winter National Championships, finishing the race in 4 minutes, 21.32 seconds at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

Fierro posted the record mark in the prelim race, in which he placed 10th, allowing him to qualify for the "B" final.

In the "B" final, Fierro placed 15th, though he was unable to duplicate his groundbreaking performance from the prelim, finishing in 4:23.55.

Fresno City downs Cuesta men

The Rams jumped to a 18-5 lead in the first half on their way to a 61-52 win.

Strong defense and a season-low nine turnovers kept Cuesta (5-4) in the game, and the Cougars were only down three points with three and a half minutes to go before Fresno City ran away with the victory.

The Cougars were 18 for 54 from the floor.

Oscar Pedroso led Cuesta with nine points.

Cuesta women rout Hartnell, 102-35

Courtney Chadwick provided 19 points, six assists and seven steals as the Cougars (6-0) tied the best start in school history from 2008.

The 102 points marked the second-most ever scored by Cuesta, which had four players in double figures. Kaylee Williams had 17 points, Miriam Zabinsky scored 16 and Melissa Lemus scored 15 as the Cougars pummeled Hartnell (0-6).
