Prep Roundup: SLO boys basketball team downs North Bakersfield in tourney

Braun scores 14 points as Tigers roll to 46-30 win at Harding event

The San Luis Obispo High boys basketball team won its first game in the Morro Bay Harding Invitational over North Bakersfield 46-30 on Thursday.

Chase Braun led the Tigers with 14 points, and Jonathan Edwards scored nine.

The Tigers opened the scoring with 13 points in the first quarter and never looked back, outscoring the Stars by 16 through the second and third quarters.

Paso Robles’ defense led the Bearcats to a 48-40 win over Nevada Union. Quinn Parker and Jason Germain each scored 10 points for Paso Robles (2-0).

Quillan Smith scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as he led Arroyo Grande to a 59-48 win over San Joaquin.

Eric Fonteneau had 18 points for the Panthers, and Andrew Madrigal had 16, as Pioneer Valley beat Morro Bay 61-30. Morro Bay dropped to 0-2 on the season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SLO, Paso Robles, Mission Prep, Nipomo at Ruth Doser Invitational at Atascadero

In a thrilling overtime game, Atascadero beat Nipomo, 54-50.

The Greyhounds came firing out of the gates as they scored 21 points and had an 11-point advantage over the Titans in the first quarter. However, Nipomo refused to give up as it scored 15 in the fourth to force overtime. Maddy Leon’s 14 points helped Atascadero secure the win.

The 2012-13 PAC 7 Defensive Player of the Year, Jessica Judge, led San Luis Obispo with 13 points and five rebounds in a 27-17 victory over the Paso Robles.

In her first game varsity game, Mission Prep’s Taylor Neal came off the bench to lead the Royals in scoring with 12 points in a 44-35 win over Independence.

I’raya Smith led Mission Prep (1-1) on defense with five steals.

Tess Boehm scored eight points for the Royals and was 2 for 2 from 3-point range and 2 for 2 from the free-throw line.

After a slow start that culminated in a 12-10 halftime deficit for the Pirates, Morro Bay (2-0) found its stroke and stormed to a 41-34 victory over Garces. Sierra Schwellenbach, Nikki Machado and Olivia MacDonald paced Morro Bay with 10 points each.

Coastal Christian at Valley Christian Tournament

Roni Garrison scored 18 points to lead the Conquerors to 41-24 victory over the junior-varsity squad from Dos Pueblos. Amy Arnold contributed 16 points, as Coastal Christian capitalized on an 18-6 halftime lead.

BOYS SOCCER

Arroyo Grande 2, Nipomo 0

Arroyo Grande (2-0) got off to a quick start as the Eagles scored twice early in the first half in a win over Nipomo (0-3).

Josanna Cassidy notched the first of his two assists when his shot rebounded off the post and Raul Muñoz was there to put it in. His second came off a cross with Juan Jazo on the receiving end. Danny Montero recorded three saves for the Eagles to preserve a clean sheet.

San Luis Obispo 2, Templeton 1

Senior Lukas Holocher scored an early penalty and a late clincher to lead the Tigers over the Eagles in a game that was deadlocked 1-1 at the half.

Christian Cabrales had five saves in the first half while Cameron Wright added three more in the second for San Luis Obispo.

Atascadero 0, Lompoc 0

The Greyhounds were unable to separate from Lompoc, but the defenses held strong. David Hernandez recorded nine saves in goal in the draw.

Coast Union 2, St. Joseph 1

Oscar Catalan broke open a 1-1 tie late in second half on an assist from Jeu Arroyo to secure the victory for Coast Union (1-1).

Mario Leon scored early in the first half off an assist from Jorge Renteria before St. Joseph tied the score midway through the second. Juan Leonardo had six saves for the Broncos.

GIRLS SOCCER

Atascadero 2, Lompoc 1

Maia Mumford assisted Brynn Frace on a late goal to put the Greyhounds (2-0) on top of Lompoc (0-2).

Niqui Mack scored for Atascadero in the first half, which ended tied at 1.

San Luis Obispo 8, Templeton 0

Forward Sydney Tamaki, and midfielders Sydney Knauer and Katarina Drake scored two goals each as the Tigers dominated the Eagles.

Goalkeeper Lily McCann had two saves for San Luis Obispo (2-0).

Paso Robles 5, Morro Bay 0

Emilee Brown scored 14 seconds into the match and then went on to score two more for the Bearcats in their shutout of the Pirates (1-1).

Goalie Natalya Margrode had two saves for Paso Robles (2-0).

Mission Prep 2, Orcutt Valley 1

Emily Riforgiate led the way for the Royals (1-1) as she scored early in each half for Mission Prep in its win over Orcutt Valley. Her two unassisted goals proved crucial along with Grace Oeser’s eight saves.

St. Joseph 5, Coast Union 0

The Broncos (0-2) were shut out by the Knights at home.
