Supporting citizens

AtascaderoDecember 5, 2013

The article designating us as Unsung Heroes was appreciated, and we truly are honored, as Disaster Mental Health volunteers of the American Red Cross, to help our neighbors in crises. Our local Red Cross is always there for residents, not only when a major disaster happens, but also when a single-family fire or other small emergency happens. Every day and every night, we are able to respond to people in need. If others want to support those local services, they can donate directly and make checks payable to the San Luis Obispo County Chapter, American Red Cross.

In the county, the number of organizations that stand up to protect and support residents is remarkable, with many other unsung heroes in our neighborhoods and workplaces. Another organization that joins those efforts is the Central Coast Psychological Association, which nominated us for Unsung Heroes.

CCPA has a membership of more than 50 local psychologists and mental health professionals, many of whom also provide pro bono community services through numerous nonprofit agencies, low-cost clinics, schools and other settings, as well as supporting our local Disaster Response capabilities. They are another important component of our ability to protect and support each other at times of greatest need.
