Arroyo Grande High’s Sophie Whittle won two matches Monday at the CIF state regional girls individual tennis playoffs and will move on to the round of 32 on Dec. 3 in Whittier Narrows in the San Gabriel Valley.

Whittle also may receive a bye to advance to the round of 16, but that’s still pending and she’ll find out Wednesday.

Whittle had one bye Monday in Carpinteria, where matches were played at Carpinteria and Cate high schools, and then she beat Katrina DeGuzman of Canyon 6-2, 6-0 and Santa Barbara High’s No. 1 player, Matiea Kilstoffe, 6-3, 6-3.

“Sophie had a very tough opponent in Kilstoffe,” Arroyo Grande coach Lori Hollister said. “That was a very tough draw for them both as seeded players.”

Hollister said Whittle hit sharp backhands and served well, hitting eight to 10 aces. Whittle is 60-1 on the season.

“She was on a mission to win in straight sets,” Hollister said.

Playing in her last high school match, Arroyo Grande’s No. 2 player, senior Lauren Hayashi, lost to Elizabeth Ryan of Hillcrest Christian 6-2, 2-6, 11-9.

Hayashi, finished the season 66-6, and 232-31 in her four years as an Eagle. Hayashi was a key contributor to Arroyo Grande’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship this season.

“Lauren has been the perfect model of character, integrity and sportsmanship paired with nearly flawless tennis,” Hollister said. “The journey we’ve had together is one I’ll always cherish.”
