Coast Union football team reaches division championship game

UPDATE, SUNDAY, NOV. 24: Coast Union will play Faith Baptist at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Canoga Park for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 eight-man football championship.

Faith Baptist defeated Avalon 36-28 on Saturday in a semifinal playoff game.

ORIGINAL STORY: Danny Rodriguez picked off one of Lucerne Valley's passes in the third quarter and ran it back 35 yards to score a touchdown for Coast Union High on Friday and changed the momentum of the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 8-man football playoff semifinal game as the Broncos won 48-22.

Prior to the interception, Coast Union (11-1) was hanging on to a 21-14 lead and Lucerne Valley was driving. 

The Broncos’ defense was dominant throughout the second half, and Emmany Godinez also had an interception return for a touchdown. 

Quarterback Angel Avina had 1-yard and 10-yard rushing touchdowns. Binh Trieu had 35-yard and 27-yard touchdown runs. Lane Sutherland had a 5-yard scoring run.

Coast Union will face the winner of today’s Avalon-Faith Baptist game next week in the championship game.
