A mindful moment

Avila BeachNovember 20, 2013

While freedom to practice individual spiritual belief was one of the motivations in establishing some early American colonies, this intent includes a corollary: That of not forcing one’s faith, or one’s agnosticism or one’s atheism on another person.

Representatives in government service — from local boards to state and federal offices — shall not, however, be without a mindful moment as they gather to plan and legislate on behalf of all the society. The county of San Luis Obispo has it right. It has established as it’s motto: “Not for ourselves alone.”

Those who meet in the role of public servant have a duty to remember their responsibility to serve the community in greater good. A mindful moment beginning each meeting could be held establishing that they are gathered with the considerate intent to conduct public business “not for ourselves alone.”
