College Roundup: Cal Poly runners Frias, Hollander advance to NCAAs

Cross country standouts chosen to compete at NCAA Championships

Cal Poly cross country runners Chris Frias and Laura Hollander were selected Saturday to run as individuals at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23.

Frias finished ninth on the 10K men’s course at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento in 29 minutes, 55 seconds Friday. Hollander was seventh on the 6K course in 19:37.

Nationally, 38 individuals were selected for the championships through automatic qualifiers and at-large selections. All individuals must have finished in the top 25 at their respective regionals.

Hollander was selected last year as well and finished ninth in the nation. She was second in the NCAA West Regional last year to Oregon senior and former Mission Prep star Jordan Hasay.

VOLLEYBALL

Cal Poly 3, UC Davis 0

Megan McConnell had a match-high 15 kills and added 13 digs as the visiting Mustangs swept the Aggies 30-28, 25-19, 25-20.

The Mustangs (11-14, 5-7 Big West Conference) had five set points in the first set before finally winning the set on a kill by McConnell.

Chelsea Hardin had 13 kills, and Taylor Gruenewald had 10 kills for Cal Poly, which hit .230 as a team. Nicole Kessler had 14 digs, and Shannon Garrett had 44 assists and 10 digs.

Devon Damello and Victoria Lee led UC Davis (14-13, 6-8) with nine kills each. Jenny Woolway had 32 assists and 11 digs for the Aggies, who hit .163 as a team.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

De Anza 84, Cuesta 81, 2 OT

Cuesta (2-2) had 24 turnovers and struggled from the field, shooting 44 percent in the home loss.

Cuesta stayed in the game thanks to a 50-26 rebounding advantage.

Kyle Geer led the Cougars with 16 rebounds and had 10 points. Oscar Pedroso also had a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cuesta 103, San Diego City 64

Miriam Zabinsky led the Cougars (2-0) with 31 points 13 rebounds.

Courtney Chadwick scored 22 points, Melissa Lemus added 19 points and eight assists, and Jerrica Crosby scored 10 for the Cougars. Cuesta shot 62 percent from the field for the game.

WRESTLING

Cuesta at Southeastern Conference Championship

The Cougars won dual matches against the four other schools to clinch the conference title at Bakersfield City College and had four wrestlers named first-team all-conference.

Cuesta beat Victor Valley 48-9, Bakersfield City 34-16, East Los Angeles 35-12 and West Hills-Lemoore 22-18.

Michael Clemmensen was named all-conference at 133 pounds with two wins by forfeits, a technical fall and a pin.

Connor Pollock, Johnny Callas, Jovan Villalobos and Nathan Mesa were also first-team all-conference.

John Sinclair was named honorable mention.

Pollock (141) had two pins and a win by decision. Callas (149) had two pins, and Villalobos (174) also had two pins and a win by decision.

Mesa (184) won by two pins and two decisions.

Sinclair (165) won by a forfeit, major decision, decision and then lost by decision.
