Mission Prep wins prep football playoff opener; Nipomo eliminated from playoffs

Patrick Laird once again proved to be the spark for the Mission Prep football team in a 49-12 win over Santa Clarita Christian on Friday, scoring three rushing touchdowns and adding one on an 80-yard kickoff return in the opening round of the CIF-Southern Section Northeast Division playoffs.

A 7-6 first-quarter deficit would be as close as Santa Clarita Christian would come as the Royals (9-2) rattled off 27 unanswered to close the half and never looked back.

Evan Talbert also added two receiving touchdowns for Mission Prep.

Ventura 56, Nipomo 14

Matt Albright found Chris Owens for touchdown passes of 5 and 45 yards, but the Titans couldn’t do much else against Ventura in the opening round of the Western Division playoffs.

The Titans (5-6) had two punts blocked and recovered for touchdowns, and muffed a punt that was scooped up for a third.

“It was a positive experience for the young kids to get playoff experience, and good for the seniors to get a playoff sendoff,” Nipomo coach Russ Edwards said.
