HomeGoods, a nationwide chain store that sells discounted home décor items, will replace OfficeMax in Irish Hills Plaza off Los Osos Valley Road.

Tenant improvements for an interior remodel of the 20,000-square-foot location have been submitted to the city, with plans to open in spring 2014, said Clint Pearce of Madonna Enterprises.

A long-term lease was signed with the company, but Pearce would not disclose the terms of that agreement.

In early October the OfficeMax in Paso Robles announced it will close its doors on Nov. 23 as part of a series of store closures throughout the country.

The final closure date for the San Luis Obispo store was not available Wednesday, but it will likely remain open through year’s end, Pearce said.

“We’ve discussed the concept of them closing the store for some time, but the decision just came about very recently,” he said.

One additional OfficeMax location is on Branch Street in Arroyo Grande. The fate of that store is unknown.

HomeGoods is owned by TJX Companies, which also owns T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.

“It is a great addition to the tenant mix of the shopping center,” Pearce said. “HomeGoods is a really good retailer for long-term brick- and-mortar strength because of the way they merchandize and their business model.”

Pearce said shopping at a HomeGoods is like a “treasure hunt” for brand-name products at a discounted rate.
