Central Coast honors the military with Veterans Day events

A number of events will be held in San Luis Obispo County on Monday to celebrate Veterans Day, the national holiday set aside to honor all veterans who have served in the U.S. military.

SUNDAY

Morro Bay Veterans and Family Day Celebration. Noon to 5 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 209 Surf Street. Silent auction, live music, children’s art projects, door prizes and special honors to veterans. Cost is $5 for veterans and children under age 10; $10 for adults. 772-4467.

Oceano Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. at Oceano Depot, 1650 Front Street. The ceremony celebrates the restoration of Oceano’s World War ll Memorial.

MONDAY

Atascadero “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial, Atascadero Lake Park, Highway 41 and Portola Road. A “Quilts of Valor Presentation” honoring local veterans, music by Atascadero High School and Cuesta College chorales, color guard, bagpipe and drums, and a missing-man formation flyover by the Estrella Warbirds. The featured speaker will be USMC Capt. Ron Mullisen, who flew 83 combat missions in an A-6 attack jet in Vietnam. A barbecue sponsored by the Atascadero Kiwanis Club will follow the ceremony. Cambria Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 1000 Main St. in Cambria. Featured speaker will be Army Lt. Col. Hugh Scott, who has visited Vietnam several times and will talk about current affairs there and improved relations between the United States and Vietnam. The Cambria Chorale will provide music. Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary will serve a barbecue after the program. For information, call 924-1085.

Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum special hours. In honor of Veterans Day, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 801 Grand Ave. in San Luis Obispo. The museum ordinarily is open Wednesday through Saturday. 543-1763.

Los Osos Memorial Park Veterans Day Program. 11 a.m. at 2260 Los Osos Valley Road. The ceremony includes a placement of wreaths on veterans’ graves, an invocation, presentation and retirement of colors, rifle salute, music by San Luis Obispo County Band, and a dove release. Guest speaker will be Navy veteran Al Strunk. A lunch sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Bay Osos will follow the program. 528-1500.

Paso Robles District Cemetery Veterans Day Ceremony. 11 a.m. at 45 Nacimiento Lake Drive in Paso Robles. Master of ceremonies will be Bob Chaney, commander of VFW Post 10965. Patriotic songs, a rifle salute, flying of colors and a prayer will be offered. Veterans’ graves will be marked with flags.

Pismo Beach Veterans Day Ceremony on the Pismo Beach Pier. 11 a.m. Keynote speaker will be Lt. Col. David Franklin, commander of the 532nd Training Squadron, 381st Training Group at Vandenberg Air Force Base. The event includes presentation and retirement of colors, a rifle salute, military tribute and “Honoring our Heroes” with U.S. Rep. Lois Capps. 773-4382.

CLOSURES

The following agencies in San Luis Obispo County are closed in observance of Veterans Day on Monday:

• All public schools, Cuesta College and Cal Poly will not hold classes.

• Most state offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles.

• Most county offices, including libraries.

• All city halls.
