Prep Roundup: Mission Prep wins eighth straight football game

Patrick Laird ran for 302 yards Saturday night to lift the Mission Prep football team to a 38-22 home win over St. Margaret’s.

Mission Prep (8-1) quickly jumped out to a 17-0 lead behind a Laird touchdown and a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown by Trevor Fernandez, but 

St. Margaret’s (8-1) managed to score late in the second quarter on a 31-yard pass from Joshua Davis to Fernando Delgado. 

The Royals went into the final quarter nursing a 24-19 lead, but after surrendering a field goal, rode Laird to another score. A late Calvin Levisay interception return for a touchdown sealed it for the Royals, who have won eight straight after dropping their season opener.

Coast Union football team 8-1

Coast Union quarterback Angel Avina threw four touchdown passes for the Broncos as they beat Villanova Prep 62-20. 

Two of those touchdowns went to Quinton Rathke.   

Juan Leonardo rushed for 116 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown for Coast Union (8-1), and Binh Trieu rushed for three touchdowns and had six carries for 44 yards.

Oscar Catalon also had a touchdown catch for the Broncos, who will learn their playoff fate Monday when the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 8-man pairings are announced.

Eagles fall to Malibu in boys water polo

The Arroyo Grande boys water polo team fell behind 3-0 after one quarter and 9-3 at halftime in a 14-8 loss to Malibu.

David Vitt scored three goals and Hissam el-Effendi scored two for Arroyo Grande (17-7). 

Goalie Ronan Paulsen had nine saves for the Eagles.
