College Roundup: Cal Poly's Barber, Pang move on in tennis event

The Cal Poly men’s tennis doubles team of Devin Barber and Corey Pang advanced to the semifinals at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships with two wins Friday.

Barber and Pang defeated UC San Diego’s Ganesh Alagappan and Horea Portiu 8-7 and beat UC Santa Barbara’s Sasha Grayznov and Ziad Sultan 8-7.

Barber and Gannon Daynes were both eliminated from singles play. 

Michael Buzman of UCLA beat Barber in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3. 

Loyola Marymount’s Sebastian Bustamente beat Daynes 7-6, 6-1 in the consolation round of 16. 

Mustangs advance at Fresno State

Freshman Chanel Scudiero won twice for the Cal Poly women’s tennis team at the Fresno State Bulldogs Classic. 

Scudiero beat Angelika Sabieka of Fresno Pacific 6-3, 6-1 and Fresno State’s Tanya Murtagh 6-1, 6-3. 

Bryn Bacharach also advanced to the quarterfinals in Flight F by beating Fresno Pacific’s Megan Lee 6-3, 6-0, but then fell to Idaho’s Bety Flores 6-3, 6-3. 

The Cal Poly doubles team of Jen Cornea and Ane McPike beat Oregon’s Allie Hueffner and Kadie Hueffner 8-7 and moved into the quarterfinals of the Flight A bracket. 

Cuesta volleyball team tops Ventura

The Cuesta College volleyball team swept Ventura in a Western State Conference home showdown 25-18, 25-13, 25-21.

Riley Cooks had 16 kills, Whitney Meyer added nine kills, and Blake O’Brien had 10 digs and 29 assists for Cuesta (12-7, 5-3).
