UPDATE 2:55 p.m.: A suspicious object found at the Cayucos Pier on Thursday turned out to be an “elaborate hoax,” sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla said.

The device, found under a picnic table on the pier, turned out to be an old answering machine connected by wires to three metal tubes.

It was found around 11:40 a.m. near the Veterans’ Hall. The area was evacuated, and the San Luis Obispo County Bomb Task Force used a robot to investigate the device.

They determined it was not a bomb and not dangerous. Police will continue to investigate the object to look for potential suspects, Cipolla said.
