Phillips helps Mustangs take lead in Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational at Cypress Ridge

Cal Poly’s women’s golf team grabbed first place Monday going into today’s final round in the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.

Alex Phillips led the Mustangs with a par 73, and teammate Madison Hirsch carded a 75.

Cal Poly finished with a four-person score of 310 Monday, six strokes ahead of three teams that tied for second with 316 totals on the 5,996-yard course — Sonoma State, UC Riverside and Seattle.

Taylor Yoshitake and Asia Adell both shot scores of 81.

Weber State, Santa Clara and the Cal Poly “B” team finished in fifth place with a totals of 318.

Jamie Corr topped Cal Poly’s “B” team with a 73, and her round included an eagle. Montana Kosty carded an 80.

Phillips and Corr share the individual lead with Annie Freman of Santa Clara, all with 73s.

The final round is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start today.
