Unequal pay

Why do women’s wages continue to lag behind those of men, with no increase in the past decade? Wake up, ladies. Recently, The Tribune reported that the new (male) San Luis Obispo City Clerk’s starting salary is $98,800. He replaces the (female) clerk who made $82,607. Why the difference?

The U.S. Census Bureau’s report, issued on Sept. 17, shows women still fall behind men, earning just 77 cents to every dollar earned by their male counterparts. These 2012 statistics reveal men nationwide earn $49,398, women, $37,791, or 77 percent.

This nationwide problem can be corrected. The answer to pay equity lies in the passage of The Paycheck Fairness Act. Our local representative, Lois Capps, is an original co-sponsor of the bill, but it languishes in committee. Why? Because Republicans, having a majority in the House, control when a bill comes to the floor for a vote.

Women deserve fair pay now. Each one of us needs to take action and bring pressure on those Congressmen, through emails and phone calls to John Boehner and others, that this inequity must stop. Women have the right to equal pay for equal work.
