A Santa Maria woman was arrested Thursday after allegedly stealing a pickup truck in Shell Beach and leading police on a chase that reached speeds of 80 mph before the woman ran into a fence in Arroyo Grande.

Bobbie Jo Theobodeau, 37, was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property and evading arrest, said Pismo Beach police Sgt. Bryan Cox.

The Ford Ranger truck went missing when its owner left the keys under the seat and walked across the street to help a neighbor on Santa Fe Avenue in Shell Beach at about 3:40 p.m., Cox said. When he returned the truck was gone, Cox said. The man called police, and an officer spotted the vehicle parked on Cypress Street in Pismo Beach. When he approached, the woman sitting in the driver’s seat started the truck and took off, Cox said.

The chase wound through surface streets and onto Highway 1, before the woman ran into a fence on Viejo Road near Zenon Way in Arroyo Grande, Cox said.

She told police “she took the truck to get home,” he said.
