More than 600 PG&E customers on and near Cambria’s Park Hill area were without electricity for about 12 hours Saturday, Oct. 19, because some equipment failed.

The outage began about 10:30 a.m. According to Blair Jones, PG&E spokesman, power was restored to about 600 customers by 9:43 p.m., with the remaining 10 going back online by 10:35 p.m.

Neighbors reported that they saw four men in two boom trucks installing a new transformer assembly after the power went out.

A downed power line triggered a small fire on the Pembrook Drive pole, but the mini-blaze was out when firefighters arrived, according to staffers at Cambria Fire Department. A CalFire engine also responded.

Jones said nobody was injured in a related incident Saturday afternoon when the driver of a PG&E bucket truck — heading for the Cambria outage — swerved and then overcorrected on Highway 1 Saturday afternoon, about two miles north of San Geronimo Road.

CHP spokesman Officer Richard Lee said the report shows that, when driver Victor Velasquez, 40, of Arroyo Grande, overcorrected, the top-heavy vehicle swerved and then tipped over onto its right side.

Although it appears to be a “flat out accident,” he said, with no other cars involved and no weather conditions, the incident remains under investigation.

Some who drove past the accident said there were major skid marks and broken glass scattered all around, and it seemed chunks had been gouged out of the roadbed.
