Templeton Tennis Ranch is under construction after delays

Templeton Tennis Ranch, a membership-based club at 345 Championship Lane in Templeton, is under construction, with plans to open in April.

It will feature seven lighted tennis courts — five hard courts, one synthetic grass court and one championship court — as well as two pickleball courts and a clubhouse, general manager Roberto Hassey said.

The venture, led by co-owners Marc Eisemann of Templeton and Ralph and Judy Goehring of Cayucos, was originally due to open in 2012 but the economic downturn delayed construction of the approximately $4 million project, Ralph Goehring said.

“The delay is solely due to financing,” he added. “We were told by several banks that they would finance us, but the reality was that the economy, and thus the banks, was too weak.”

The trio, with Eisemann also serving as the development’s general contractor, plans to further expand the site after it opens.

A 14,500-square-foot clubhouse has been pared down to 6,300 square feet and will include a pro shop, fitness center, exercise room, saunas, locker rooms and other amenities.

Plans to build a second story for a restaurant and bar are planned, Ralph Goehring said, but the owners would like to open the entire club first to establish a membership base before working on those.

The tennis ranch is initially slated to employ five to seven people, Goehring said, with the possibility of hiring up to five independent contractors. More will be hired when the restaurant opens.

The club will also host social events with live bands and dancing parties, and will offer pingpong and horseshoe games and a one-third mile hiking trail.

Membership prices are still being determined, Hassey said, but there will be individual, family and corporate rates competitive for the area.

The public is invited to get a sneak peek of the project from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 2. There will be a free barbecue lunch with live music; beer and wine will be for sale. Those interested must reserve a spot by Oct. 26 by emailing Hassey at manager@ttrtennis.com or calling 550-4826.
