Cal Poly’s women’s soccer team scored all three goals in the first half on its way to a 3-1 home win over UC Riverside on Sunday in front of 667 fans at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The win meant Cal Poly (9-7-0) held on to sole possession of first place in the Big West Conference at 5-1-0.
Megan Abutin, Kendra Bonsall and Elise Krieghoff scored for the Mustangs, and Haley Walker had two assists.
Walker assisted the first two goals as Abutin and Bonsall scored in the 32nd and 33rd minutes, respectively, before Krieghoff scored her 18th goal of the season off a cross from Abutin in the 40th minute.
UC Riverside (6-10-1, 3-3-0) prevented a shutout when Sammy Arellano scored unassisted in the 50th minute.
The Mustangs entered the day atop the conference standings with 12 points and earned three more to increase their total to 15.
The three goals were a first-half season high for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made seven saves. The sophomore has taken just one loss at home this season, and is 9-0-0 on the year when Cal Poly scores first.
Krieghoff extended her single-season program record with her 18th goal. She came into the match ranked second in the country in total goals, but is now tied again with Illinois junior Jannelle Flaws for the national lead.
