Cayucos schools trustee Cathy Launchbaugh resigns

Cathy Launchbaugh has resigned from the Cayucos school board, and the board is seeking applicants to fill the vacancy.

Jim Brescia, superintendent of the Cayucos Elementary School District, said applicants must be 18 years or older, live in the 93430 ZIP code and be registered to vote in this county. Launchbaugh’s term runs through 2014.

Brescia said two public forums are to be held at which applicants can ask questions and make presentations. The first is set from noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 9, in the sandwich area of Hoppe’s, 78 Ocean Ave. The second is to immediately precede the board’s regular meeting Nov. 13 at Cayucos Elementary School auditorium, 301 Cayucos Drive.

Brescia said he’ll encourage the board to appoint the new member at the Nov. 13 meeting, unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as a large number of late applicants.

Launchbaugh resigned at the board’s Oct. 9 meeting, saying she wanted to spend more time with her daughter, a high school student. Launchbaugh also said she wants to dedicate herself to studies toward becoming a minister in her church.

Because the vacancy occurred more than three months before the next general election, the school board has 60 days to fill Launchbaugh’s seat before the county Board of Supervisors does it for them.
