Back to equality

San Luis ObispoOctober 16, 2013

Freedom is one of the cornerstone principles in the Constitution, and so is equality. We can’t defend one and neglect the other.

I confess: I am an old white male. Nevertheless, I reject the largely white, largely male cry that we should “take our country back.” Take what back from whom? Our laws and societal conventions are already stacked in favor of rich white men. Will we be satisfied only when we have all the power and all the money?

Equality had a surge in the 1960s and 1970s and has been declining since the 1980s. It’s long overdue for that pendulum to swing back toward equal opportunity for all.
