Because the space allotted here does not allow an appropriate response to the bass ackwards (his frat boy term) thinking of Christopher Arends Oct. 10 letter to the editor, I would like to suggest one read the following two commentaries.
First, there was the columnist Nicholas D. Kristofs commentary Governing by blackmail isnt gridlock on the same page and day Mr. Arends correspondence appeared. Follow that up by reading an op-ed piece on Oct. 4 in the Los Angeles Times by Russell Korobkin, faculty director of the Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Program at the UCLA School of Law. These two astute writers will certainly clear up the obfuscation-filled letter from Mr. Arend.
It is perhaps telling that Mr. Arend and his ilk refuse to refer to the Affordable Care Act by its official name. Instead, they prefer the conservative rights race-coded term Obamacare a semantic trick employed to appeal to the bigoted instincts of those who would perhaps most benefit from it.
Though polls show most Americans blame the Republican Party for the shutdown, the Tea Party inmates are still running the asylum a John Boehner decision that suggests we should beware of stupid people in small groups.
