Induct Johnston

Arroyo GrandeOctober 11, 2013

With the Hall of Fame football game this weekend, I was again shocked that Craig Johnston has not been inducted into the Cal Poly Hall of Fame.

Craig has had an outstanding post-college career as a high school football coach and continues to be an ambassador for Cal Poly’s academic and athletic programs.

A few numbers: Only quarterback in school history to lead the Mustangs to a national championship (1980), Only quarterback in Cal Poly history to lead his team to the national playoffs back-toback, only three-year starter in school history, finished his career as the leader in total passing yards, first quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season, top seven passer in four all-time passing categories and 18 years as head football coach at Carmel High School while obtaining numerous Coach of the Year awards.

The Hall of Fame is reserved exclusively for those who stand out above the crowd. It also defines standards and special leadership qualities that take an entire football team to a higher level of play, not just by the numbers they accumulate or playing professionally.

I speak for many ex-players and coaches: Give this man a Hall pass!
