Burn complaint

CambriaOctober 4, 2013

I am outraged with the prescribed burn that took place Sept. 19 at Piedras Blancas.

It filled the air in San Simeon and Cambria and the lungs of citizens with smoke. It is another irresponsible decision made by the same folks that brought you the fire that burned out of control at Montaña de Oro State Park, burned the Caltrans fence at Estero Bluffs and smoked out the visitors and employees at the Hearst Castle Visitor Center.

It is bad enough when inhabitants have to endure unhealthy smoky conditions because of accidental fires, but this is our tax dollars at work.

A general notification was sent out by State Parks on Aug. 6 that this and other burns may occur from Aug. 7 to Nov. 29. A more up-to-date notification would have been appreciated to alleviate the fear that many felt by not knowing whether the town was burning.

To voice a complaint about the poor air quality that you experienced for this and for any of the future similarly executed prescribed burns, you can call the county Air Pollution Control District. It keeps track of the complaints. Its number is 781-5912.
