I sympathize with homeowners living in neighborhoods adjacent to Cal Poly that have an abundance of student neighbors. However, in a state that has grown from less than 20 million to almost 40 million over the past 45 years, communities with colleges should expect an increase in enrollment and thus greater numbers of students living close to campus.
Cal Poly has almost 7,000 students living on campus; San Diego State, with double the enrollment, has less than 3,000. Out of respect for the community, Cal Poly is planning more student housing as it increases enrollment. The university has been at its current location for more than a hundred years. Acknowledging the impact of living next to a college prior to purchase might lead to acceptance that in a state where the population doubles in less than 50 years, there will be more students in the neighborhood.
