Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said Romp has been operating in San Luis Obispo for five years; it's been operating for eight. Also, Romp's Los Olivos store will be located at 2928 San Marcos Ave.

Romp, a shoe boutique in downtown San Luis Obispo, is stepping into a second location in Los Olivos, said store owner Karen English.

The boutique, which celebrated its eight-year anniversary in San Luis Obispo this year, specializes in European footwear, bags and accessories by designers that English personally handpicks while touring overseas.

Though it had suffered during the recession and retrofitting projects downtown that sometimes blocked business, English said revenue has been increasing for the past two years, and the time seemed right to open the new spot in Los Olivos.

“It’s one of my favorite destination towns,” she said. “And all of a sudden it is just popping with retail stores. I thought it felt like the perfect time.”

The San Luis Obispo location at 714 Higuera St. will remain open, and English will split her time between the two.

Several of the store’s current employees will also spend a day or two during the week at the new location, English said. She is looking to hire another employee who would be in Los Olivos full time as well.

The new location at 2928 San Marcos Ave. is significantly smaller than her current spot, English said — 350 square feet compared with the 1,300 square feet — but that just gives the new spot a “more cozy” feel. She declined to disclose investment in the new location.

Along with the new feel, English said she will offer a different selection at the Los Olivos location, with some new designers and different products not used at the San Luis Obispo store.

“They’re just two totally different vibes,” English said. “The new spot has a boutiquey, beautiful vibe. I even have green grass and trees! That’s very different from the major road at the other spot.”
