San Luis Obispo-based mixed martial artist and Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight top-ranked contender Glover Teixeira will fight longtime champion Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title, likely Feb. 1 in Newark, N.J., ESPN.com recently reported.
The 33-year-old Teixeira (22-2) is riding a 20-fight winning streak, including a first-round technical knockout of Ryan Bader on Sept. 4 at UFC Fight Night 28 in Teixeira’s native Brazil.
Teixeira fights out of San Luis Obispo, trains at The Pit and is a former sparring partner of UFC Hall of Famer and former Cal Poly wrestler Chuck Liddell.
Another former Cal Poly wrestler, UFC featherweight No. 1 contender Chad Mendes, will fight Nik Lentz on Dec. 14 at UFC on Fox 9 in Sacramento.
Mendes (15-1) was a two-time NCAA Division I All-America wrestler at Cal Poly, including a second-place national finish at 141 pounds in 2008.
