College Roundup: Cal Poly sweeps Long Beach in volleyball

Mustangs improve to 2-0 in Big West with 25-18, 27-25, 25-23 win over Long Beach State

The Cal Poly volleyball team swept Long Beach State 25-18, 27-25, 25-23 at Mott Gym on Saturday night.

The Mustangs (8-7, 2-0 Big West) have already doubled their win total from last year’s 4-26 season. Cal Poly needs one more conference win to tie last year’s total.

Chelsea Hardin had a match-high 15 kills to lead Cal Poly. Taylor Gruenewald had 12 kills, and Megan McConnell had 11 kills and seven digs for the Mustangs. Maddie Kuber had 43 assists, and Jennifer Keddy had six kills and eight digs.

Long Beach State had a set point in the second set, but Cal Poly tied it on an attack error and then won three of the next four points to take a 2-0 set lead.

Chisom Okpala had 11 kills for the 49ers (7-8, 1-1), and Alex Reid had 10 kills.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Cuesta at Cabrillo Tournament

The Cougars won the tournament by beating Diablo Valley 9-8 and Modesto 9-6.

Rachel Gruetzmacher scored three goals against Diablo Valley, and Amber Ehmer had two for Cuesta (12-2). 

Against Modesto, Haley Shafer led Cuesta with three goals, and Gruetzmacher and Molly Casey each scored twice.

MEN’S TENNIS 

Cal Poly at Bulldog Classic 

The Mustangs won seven matches on the second day of play at the Fresno State tournament. 

Fresno State’s doubles team of Ethan Lopez and Nikolas Papic beat Cal Poly’s Ben Donovan and Cory Pang in the championship match, 8-5. 

Three Cal Poly singles players lost in the semifinals. Marco Comuzzo defeated Fresno State’s Lopez 6-0, 6-3, then lost to Fresno State’s Sam MacNeil 6-4, 6-4. 

Pang beat Fresno City’s Luis Ochoa in singles, 7-5, 6-2, then lost to Lopez, 6-4, 6-3. 

Gannon Daynes won against Fresno City’s Alec Bessinger 6-0, 6-2. Pacific’s Eric Cedarwall beat Daynes in the semifinals, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.  

WRESTLING

Bakersfield Dual Tournament

Cuesta went 3-1 on the day. 

Following wins over Santa Ana (30-18) and East Los Angeles (26-21), the Cougars fell to Mt. San Antonio (28-19). They finished the day with a victory over Bakersfield (35-15). 

Michael Clemmensen, Julian Purdy, Connor Pollack and Jovan Villallobos all were 3-0 in the tournament for Cuesta.
