Poly president’s grammar off

AtascaderoSeptember 23, 2013

Did Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong actually say “the university should continue to grow enrollment?” If so, he might want to check into one of his own English classes, as a more appropriate phrase would have been “to increase enrollment.” The verb “grow” has an organic context, commonly referring to plants and animals, although “trendy” business jargon is trying to change this.

And if Armstrong is concerned about graduation rates, perhaps he should look at the policies in the admissions’ office, and be a little more strict in determining who is admitted.
