Ever since relocating to Morro Bay, Ive been Bill Morems fan. Thats 20 of his more than 30 years in journalism.
Bill is the quintessential journalist: observes, reports, writes. Thats what journalists should do, but those skills are in distressing decline, which is why he will be sorely missed.
They include passionate involvement with the story and dispassionate telling of it, inclusion of all the necessary facts and incisive evaluation of them and writing with style and elegance that elevate the story in language that readers understand.
Thats impossible to do in a news story composed of 140-character tweets. Context is crowded out by updates, the surface gets all the attention, depth disappears.
Im happy for Bill whos retiring from The Tribune early enough in life to pursue longer sentences, full paragraphs, whole news.
