A 78-year-old man and his 72-year-old wife were sent to the hospital Saturday after their car crashed into a tree along Los Osos Valley Road.

The couple, Rodrigo and Guillerima Martinez of Los Osos, were driving on Los Osos Valley Road near Clark Valley Road shortly after 5 p.m. when Rodrigo Martinez made an "unsafe turning movement" for unknown reasons, according to a news release from the CHP.

The car, a 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup, crossed the roadway and struck a tree. Cal Fire personnel had to extract the couple from the car because of vehicle damage.

Rodrigo Martinez suffered multiple rib fractures, a fractured femur and a lacerated spleen, according to the news release. Guillerima Martinez had a fractured femur.

Both were taken to the trauma center at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to the CHP.
