College Roundup: Cal Poly’s Hirsch sets school record by shooting 66

Both Mustangs teams in first place in local Firestone Grill Invitational

The Cal Poly men’s and women’s golf teams lead after the first round of the Firestone Grill Invitational on Saturday at Monarch Dunes Golf Course.

Cal Poly’s Madison Hirsch shot a school record 5-under 66, and leads teammates Taylor Yoshitake and Morgan Thomas by eight strokes.

The previous school record was a 70.

Asia Adell is in fifth place (76) ahead of Montana Kosty (77), Jamie Corr (78) and Alex Phillips (78). Kosty and Corr are playing for Cal Poly’s B team.

The Cal Poly A team leads with a score of 290. Cal Lutheran is in second (318), followed by Cal Poly B (320), CSU Bakersfield (321) and Idaho State (345).

The men’s team leads Claremont Mudd 283-289. Cal Lutheran is third (293), followed by CSU Bakersfield (295).

Kethan Reddy from Claremont Mudd leads the men’s tournament with a 66. Cal Poly’s Jordan Wright (68), Cal Lutheran’s Mikey McGinn (69), Claremont Mudd’s Justin Beck (70) and Cal Poly’s Court Lewis (70) competing unattached round out the top five.


Arizona State Tournament

Cal Poly won its first match of the day in five sets over Louisiana-Monroe.

Chelsea Hardin had a career-high 19 kills as the Mustangs won 25-14, 25-15, 23-25, 19-25, 15-8. Hannah Schleis had 16 kills, and Taylor Gruenewald had 15 kills.

In its second match, Cal Poly beat Alabama State 3-1. Gruenewald had 17 kills as Cal Poly won 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 25-7.

Hardin had 11 kills, Steffi Sooter had 16 digs, and Nicole Klesser had 11 digs for the Mustangs (6-7).


Cal Poly King and Queen of the Pool meet

Cal Poly finished fourth in the mixed 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 43.82 seconds and fourth in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.84.

Missy Franklin, a four-time gold medalist from the 2012 London Olympics and current Cal Golden Bear, competed in the preliminary rounds of the medley relay. Her team qualified in fourth. Rachel Bootsma, who also won gold with Franklin on the 400-medley team in London, was on the Cal team in the freestyle medley that finished third.


Cuesta at West Valley Tournament

In San Jose, the Cougars beat College of San Mateo 11-7. Freshman Haley Shafer had a team-high four goals for Cuesta.

Cuesta (7-1) won 17-9 in the second game against West Valley.

Freshman Rachel Gruetzmacher of Atascadero led Cuesta with six goals in the second game and eight goals on the day.
