Correction: Because of incorrect information from the Atascadero Fire Department, an earlier version of this story misstated the estimated value of the property's contents lost in the fire.

A juvenile playing with a lighter in the backyard started a vegetation fire that started after 4 p.m. Thursday at 7800 Sinaloa Road in Atascadero, according to the Atascadero Fire Department.

The fire was controlled in 15 minutes, and firefighters needed an additional hour to mop up, fire officials said.

In a news release, the Fire Department said 15 firefighters were dispatched to find an area of vegetation about 100 by 100 feet burning at the location.

Two engines and a command vehicle from the Atascadero Fire Department were dispatched to the fire, along with one engine and a command vehicle from Cal Fire, the news release stated. Two Atascadero police units also responded.

Fire officials estimated the property value loss at $25,000 and the content value loss at $3,000. They estimate that $400,000 worth of property value was saved.

Firefighters credited the occupants' weed abatement with slowing the spread of the fire.
