The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a suspicious death Tuesday night after a man’s body was discovered in rural Nipomo.

A field supervisor found the body in a drainage ditch between two fields and alerted the Sheriff’s Office about 5 p.m., according to sheriff’s spokesman Tony Cipolla.

The body was found near Division Street and Bonita School Road, Cipolla said, adding that the investigation was in its preliminary stages. Patrol detectives and coroner’s investigators were at the scene, he said.

“A field supervisor discovered the body of an adult male submerged in the water that had collected in the ditch,” Cipolla said in a sheriff’s news release. “Sheriff’s detectives are in the process of recovering the body, collecting physical evidence, and trying to identify the body.”

Investigators had yet to determine a cause of death. No further information was available late Tuesday night.
