Find a solution on basin

San Luis ObispoSeptember 4, 2013

With the urgency ordinance on the Paso Robles groundwater basin on the books, our county has now inherited the responsibility to find a win-win solution to a problem that demands it. In voting for it, supervisors Debbie Arnold and Frank Mecham are to be congratulated for trying to soften its provisions and the potentially dire consequences it poses should a solution elude us.

The North County groundwater problem is too big not to solve, moratorium or not, but there are many who don’t want to solve it. Our county government is great at finding problems, yet it has a lousy track record of solving them. It is now up to the voices of reason — Debbie and Frank — to hold the county’s feet to the fire in the relentless search for a solution involving a combination of conservation, reuse of treated wastewater effluent, redistributing existing water resources and the procurement of new resources.

After all, Steve Sinton of Shandon rightly stated, “We are all in this together,” at the hearing. So true, yet we can only hope that board Chairman Bruce Gibson will be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.
