Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande wins girls tennis season opener over Santa Ynez

Sophie Whittle swept her three singles sets without dropping a game Tuesday, and teammate Lauren Hayashi dropped only two games in three sets in leading the Arroyo Grande High girls tennis team to a 13-5 season-opening road win over Santa Ynez.

The Eagles also got a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 doubles sweep from the team of Milena Rodgers and Olivia Madison.

Orcutt Academy 10, San Luis Obispo 8

Maya O’Brien won two of her three singles sets, and two Tigers’ doubles teams won two of their three sets, but it wasn’t enough as the Spartans downed San Luis Obispo in the nonleague match.

The doubles team of Caroline Burk and Annaliest Lippold won two out of three sets, as did the Tigers’ team of Lauren Hutkin and Ivee Collins.

Paso Robles 11, Templeton 7

Maddie Berry and Lauren Martinez each won two of three singles sets in leading the Bearcats over the Eagles in the season opener for both teams.

Paso Robles also had a sweep in doubles from the team of Lindsey Horst and Diana Grijalea, who won 7-5, 6-2, 6-0.

Atascadero 16, Mission Prep 2

Sydney Sima and Sierra Walcott didn’t drop a game in three sets to lead the Greyhounds to the road win in the season opener for both teams.

Atascadero also got a 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 doubles sweep from the team of Natalie Manier and Victoria Thek.

Lulu Mac won 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 in singles for Atascadero. 

Morro Bay 10, Coast Union 8

Tess Badrigian won her three singles sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 in leading the Pirates over the Broncos in the season opener for both teams.

Morro Bay’s Sara Keas and June Janzen won their two doubles sets 6-0, 6-1.

For Coast Union, Melissa Mathieson and Maddie May both won two of their three singles sets, and the doubles team of Renee Johnson and Karina Ochoa won two of their three doubles sets.

GIRLS GOLF

Morro Bay 268, St. Joseph 277

Desiree Gillaspy took nine-hole medalist honors with a 39 for the Knights, but Morro Bay’s balance carried the Pirates to the nonleague win.

Lily Keogh led Morro Bay with a 44, and teammate Crystal Gaughhan shot a 54.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Templeton 3, Atascadero 2

Led by Autumn Russell’s 17 kills, the Eagles held on to beat the Greyhounds 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 15-9. 

Lauren Raulston recorded six kills in her varsity debut for Templeton. Lucy Tortillo had three solo blocks for the Eagles, and Cecelia Mazarrotto added 15 assists and three aces. 

Kendall Featherstone led Atascadero with 15 kills and two blocks, Sabrina Degman had 16 digs, and Marin Cracknell added five kills and five blocks.

Coast Union 3, Morro Bay 2

Cristina Placencia had eight kills and 15 digs for Coast Union as the Broncos won 25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-13.

Sage Radecki had 32 assists for the Broncos, Patty Bucio had seven kills,  and Itzel Saavedra had five kills for Coast Union. 

Kassie McClory led the Pirates with eight kills and 12 digs, Amaya Toke had 16 digs, Sybella Paredes had six kills and 16 digs, and Dani Donaldson added four kills and six aces.

Mission Prep 3, North County Christian 0

Noelle Laird had eight kills, and Jennifer Laird had 15 digs and seven services aces to lead the Royals to a 25-14, 25-12, 25-15 nonleague win over the Crusaders in the season opener for both teams.

Samantha Fernandez had 15 assists for Mission Prep, Sammi Atwel had four aces and five digs, and Sarah Reed added four aces and six digs.

For North County Christian, Aliyah Morrison had four aces and nine kills, Gabrielle Morrison had 13 assists, and Madison Morrison added eight digs.
