Cal Poly’s Laura Hollander opened the cross country season by breaking her own course record at the UC Santa Barbara Lagoon Open on Saturday, and on Tuesday, she picked up two awards for that course record.
Hollander was named the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Association’s National Female Athlete of the Week for turning in a 5K time of 16 minutes, 36 seconds Saturday, breaking her course record of 16:42.12 set in her first career cross country meet last year.
Hollander also helped the Mustangs to a season-opening 27-28 win over UC Santa Barbara and was named the women’s Big West Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Cal Poly’s Chris Frias was named the men’s Big West Cross Country Athlete of the Week after finishing second at the Lagoon Open and leading the Mustangs to a 26-29 win over the Gauchos. He covered the 8K course in 24:25.70.
Krieghoff honored by Big West again
Cal Poly forward Elise Krieghoff was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for women’s soccer for the second straight week.
Krieghoff scored two goals Friday in a 4-0 win over Sacramento State. She has a nation-leading seven goals in helping the Mustangs to a 3-0 start. Cal Poly will host San Jose State on Friday.
