Defining victory?

Arroyo GrandeSeptember 2, 2013

Now that it looks like we are going to go one step farther in the Middle East, there is one question that I have never heard asked, and to which I can’t begin to imagine any possible answer to: How should we define what we mean by “victory” in that part of the world? This is a serious and challenging question.

It sounds like a simple question, right? But try to define what conditions would mean victory. No more sectarian violence? No more anti-Americanism? No more terrorism? No more anti-Israel vitriol? Peace in the region when we pull out our troops? They adopt the “American way of life” and our free democracy? Each Islamic faction accepts the other factions?

Think about it. And, while you’re at it, think how likely each definition is to come to fruition.
