The Cal Poly women’s soccer team opened the season with a 3-0 nonconference victory over Loyola Marymount on Friday night.

With Alex G. Spanos Stadium still undergoing construction upgrades, the Mustangs got two goals in the opening 20 minutes of a match played at the Cal Poly Sports Complex.

Junior midfielder Sara Lancaster broke the tie with a goal in the 11th minute.

Sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff, who scored a team-leading 11 goals last season, assisted on Lancaster’s goal, then scored one of her own in the 19th minute.

Krieghoff beat Lions goalkeeper Brittany Jagger on a quick assist from senior defender Cristina Farrington for the 2-0 advantage.

Junior forward Lauren Heer came off the bench to score the final goal in the 74th minute on an assist from senior midfielder Kacey Held.

Cal Poly dominated possession in the first half to lead 13-3 in shots at the half. Loyola Marymount was more aggressive in the second half, holding a 9-3 advantage in shots.

The Lions had a chance to get on the board on a shot in the 76th minute, but Mustangs sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made a diving save to her right to preserve the shutout. She finished with five saves on a night Cal Poly was able to utilize 19 different players.

Cal Poly travels to face Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. Sunday before returning home to play Sacramento State at 7 p.m. next Friday.

The Hornets fell 1-0 to UC Davis in their season opener Friday.
