Shiny new fire engines will be seen responding to emergencies in Pismo Beach and Los Osos starting in September.

The city of Pismo Beach and the Los Osos Community Services District, which have contracts with Cal Fire for fire protection services, recently joined in the bidding and purchase of two 2013 Crimson Type 1 Pumper fire engines.

“With a joint purchase, both agencies saved a significant amount of money, and this savings directly benefits the residents,” a Cal Fire news release said.

Each engine cost approximately $450,000, according to Chris Peterson, fire captain and paramedic at Cal Fire South Bay Station 15 in Los Osos.

In Los Osos, the new engine will allow the station to sell its former primary engine, which is a mid-1990s model, he said.

At the Cal Fire/Pismo Beach Fire Department, the new engine will replace a 1986 model.

The new engines have cleaner exhaust emissions and bring emergency response improvements to both fire stations, such as advanced light towers to assist with night traffic collisions and cliff rescues, the capability of running two extrication tools at the same time while on vehicle accidents, and specialized cabinets to protect equipment from the elements, the release said.

Both engines also carry a 35-foot ladder to allow access to second and third stories on most buildings, as opposed to the standard 24-foot ladder carried on most engines.

The engines were purchased from Emergency Vehicles Group, Crimson Fire, according to Michelle Pearson, administrative assistant for Cal Fire Pismo Beach.

The public can tour the new engines at two upcoming celebrations:

  • The Pismo Beach Firefighter’s Association will host an open house from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Fire Station at 1000 Bello St.
  • Cal Fire South Bay Station 15 will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Vons parking lot, 1130 Los Osos Valley Road, Los Osos.
