New bulletin board displays events in San Miguel

Special to The TribuneAugust 22, 2013

When in San Miguel for the Car Show on Friday and Saturday or the Old Timers Picnic on Sunday afternoon, take time to admire the new, improved and very classy Community Bulletin Board next to the Fire Department on Mission Street. A joint effort brought it up to date.

The original signboard was provided by the volunteer firefighters some years ago. Repainting was done by Laverne and Gib Buckman and some Lillian Larsen School students.

The beautiful new header was built by brothers Dave and Jim Murrell and painted by Steve Kalar. The board is meant to display large posters and banners for events sponsored by our local service organizations; their logos will soon be posted on it. Good work, everyone!

School is in session, so be watchful as you drive.

Approximately 60 Lillian Larsen students had an exceptional experience this summer when our school was the only one in the county to receive a NASA Summer of Innovation grant for students in grades four to eight. They spent eight days learning the Engineering Design Process and building recyclable projects under the direction of teacher Ann Wilson.

The program continues through the school year, and those students will spend time on Wednesdays with NASA Best Practices hands-on learning. The program is geared to challenge students toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through age-appropriate activities.
