Two arrested in alleged hit-and-run that killed pair near Shandon

Update: Two people have been arrested in connection with a suspected hit-and-run that killed two people on Highway 46 East near Shandon on Saturday.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 46 and Centre Street, at approximately 1:15 p.m.

According to a new release, Vicente Muniz Montes, 38, of Shandon, was driving a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he attempted a left turn and collided with an oncoming 2012 Nissan Versa. A 2005 Toyota Matrix also collided with the Nissan.

The crash killed both passengers in the Nissan: a man, 69, and a woman, 68. One was from Shafter and the other from Bakersfield. The Sheriff’s Office is attempting to contact next of kin before releasing their names.

Montes, who was believed to be intoxicated at the time, fled on foot with the Jeep’s other passenger, Florencio Rojas, 27, of Shandon. They were found during a search by multiple CHP ground and air units, sheriff’s deputies and K9 officers.

Montes was arrested and booked into County Jail on counts of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, felony DUI, fatal hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license and failure to appear before court (after a previous DUI arrest). His bail was set at $105,000.

Rojas was arrested as an accessory, and his bail was set at $5,000.

As of Sunday afternoon, bail had been posted for neither Montes nor Rojas.

The crash killed a man, 69, and a woman, 68, who were both from Bakersfield.

Two suspects allegedly fled the scene on foot and were later arrested.
